Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, was presented with the Pat Tillman Award at an ESPN sports event for his work with injured veterans at the Invictus Games. The award was named after an American war hero killed in Afghanistan. Now Pat Tillman’s mother has objected to the award and expressed shock at the choice.

“I am shocked that they have chosen such a controversial and polarising person as the winner,” the mother told the Mail.

“There are recipients who are much better suited. There are people who work in the veterans community and do amazing things to help veterans. These people don’t have the money, the resources, the connections or the privileges that Prince Harry has. I feel these types of people deserve recognition,” said Pat Tillman’s mother.

Prince Harry will receive the award on July 11 in Los Angeles. A petition has also been submitted calling on the authorities to reconsider their decision.

What is the Pat Tillman Award?
The Pat Tillman Award honors an individual with a strong connection to sport who has served others in a way that reflects the spirit of former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger Pat Tillman. Prince Harry was selected for this award because of his own military service as a Forward Air Controller and Apache helicopter pilot in Afghanistan, as well as Harry’s Invictus Foundation and its commitment to supporting the mental and physical health of wounded servicemen and women through sport.

Football player Marcus Rashford won the award in 2021 for raising funds to feed school children during the Covid lockdowns.

Sports analyst Pat McAfee sharply criticized the decision, saying Prince Harry is no longer a prince. “Why do ESPYs do this shit? When you do something like this, you know the immediate reaction from people and sports fans and people with common sense and common sense is going to be, ‘Hey, don’t let our damn guy get with that guy,'” he said.
