Glastonbury fans were stunned after hearing Chris Martin speak during Coldplay’s headline show

Chris Martin surprised Glastonbury fans when he spoke during Coldplay’s headlining performance this weekend.

The singer addressed the huge crowd during the band’s record-breaking performance on stage at Worthy Farm on Saturday night (June 29).

Coldplay are now the only band to have headlined the legendary festival five times. This year’s performance was very special, however, as they shared the stage with a celebrity guest.

The band invited Back to the Future Actor Michael J. Fox joined them on stage and played their hit “Fix You” on guitar.

The actor, who has made his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s public, sang the emotional song together with the band in front of thousands of festival-goers.

Despite this incredible moment, one thing seemed to have not escaped the viewers at home during Coldplay’s performance: Martin’s accent.

The musician, originally from Exeter in Devon, seemed to have adopted a stronger American accent.

He spoke to Glastonbury fans between performances of hits like “Yellow,” “Viva La Vida” and “Paradise,” but it wasn’t the music that most captivated fans.

On social media, someone wrote: “What the hell kind of accent is that, Chris Martin?”

Another shared: “When did Chris Martin’s accent change to the voice of a 1970s TV detective?”

And a third asked: “What is that weird fake American accent he’s imitating?”

A fourth added: “Chris Martin’s accent is weird now when he speaks. He lives in Malibu, California though, which is probably why.”

And someone else commented: “Is it just me or does Chris Martin have a very American accent? I still like his voice though.”

Before the headliner performance, Martin also revealed which of the band’s many hits is his personal favorite.

He said: “I have a clear answer for you. I don’t think it’s the best one, but for me it’s ‘Fix You.'”

The singer added: “You could say it’s too soft or whatever, but… it does exactly what it says on the tin… even when I’m singing it, at the end I think, ‘I like that.'”

The most legendary moments of Glastonbury

While there have always been people trying to sneak into Glasto, 24 years ago, intruders flocked to the infamous festival in record numbers.

The chaos was so bad that the festival had to be cancelled the following year because the site was flooded with people without tickets and there were fears at the time that the chaos could cause the festival to fail completely.

Thankfully, as we know, Glasto is still going ahead. Speaking to the Guardian in 2020, festival co-founder Michael Eavis explained: “The fencing wasn’t good enough, the security was crap. So I got confronted by the police who said, ‘You need to find someone to organise your show. You’re a nice guy and all, but you couldn’t organise something in a brewery, you know the saying?’

“I said, ‘Good. At least I can be sure I’ll get 150,000 people in no time – I’ve got the hang of it!'”

In 2002, the “Fix You” hitmakers impressed their fans by playing songs from their upcoming second album.

The band’s agent apparently felt they weren’t ready at the time, but Eavis insisted they headline.

And I’m sure they’re glad they listened, because they now have nine studio albums under their belt and millions in their bank accounts. Their “A Head Full Of Dreams” tour has grossed more than half a billion dollars in the two years it’s been running. Impressive.

Nobody expected this feud, but in 2008, rapper Jay-Z responded to Noel Gallagher’s comments about “hip-hop in Glastonbury” in the most hilarious way.

The star opened his infamous headlining performance on the Pyramid Stage with his own version of ‘Wonderwall’, which was a huge hit with fans and created one of the most iconic moments in Glasto history.

The muddiest year ever

Britain is not known for its glorious sunshine and I think this is especially true at festivals where goers often find themselves wading through the mud in wellies, beer in hand.

Glasto in particular is synonymous with being a pretty muddy festival, but 2016 was the pinnacle. Even the festival director said: “In all the 46 years it has never been this bad,” because after weeks of rain leading up to it, everything became an absolute logistical nightmare.

The scenes were chaotic to say the least. Festival goers were filmed jumping into the mud and struggling through sludge that made drinking beer seem like climbing Mount Everest. Generally everyone was just trying not to fall on their butts.

It wasn’t a pretty sight, but the British embraced the music anyway and the photos and videos have gone down in the Glasto history books.

The legendary band decided to take a more relaxed approach to festival life by taking over the secret slot on the John Peel stage in 2017.

But as is usual with “secret” performances, word quickly spread and fans flocked to the stage to see the band in action.

This was a long way from their previous appearance at Glasto, where their headlining show was marred by serious technical issues that severely affected the sound.

Kylie’s long-awaited headline performance

In 2019, Kylie Minogue lit up the Pyramid Stage with her headlining set, but she should have taken the stage much earlier.

14 years ago, the pop princess had to cancel her performance after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Her appearance on stage was therefore something very special for her and her fans.

Her performance was voted the most watched in Glastonbury history, reaching a peak audience of 3.9 million, beating the likes of Ed Sheeran, Adele and even Beyoncé.

Alex from Glasto

That same year, rapper Dave created perhaps one of the most meme-worthy Glasto moments when he brought a guy named Alex on stage to sing “Thiago Silva” with him, which he absolutely nailed.

It’s safe to say that this moment went viral and the then 15-year-old became known as “Alex from Glasto.”

Given his incredible rapping skills and the fact that he was wearing a bucket hat, FILA bag, and Paris Saint-Germain shirt, this isn’t really a surprise. Awesome.
