There are 7 road closures in Michigan this week

With Thursday being the Fourth of July, road construction will be slower this week, but that doesn’t necessarily mean everything will run smoothly on Michigan’s roads.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), more than 40 new lanes, ramps and road closures are expected to occur between Sunday, June 30 and Saturday, July 6.

Construction projects will require closures of numerous major roadways, including I-696 and I-75 in Oakland County, M-51 in Berrien County, and US 131 in Kent County.

Even where there are no construction sites, drivers must expect traffic jams. According to AAA forecasts, more than 2.3 million residents are expected to drive at least 50 miles from home this week.

Below is a list of closures to be aware of this week. All projects are weather dependent. State authorities remind drivers to slow down and obey signage in work zones.

A complete list of road construction projects is available through MDOT’s online map and construction directory.

M-51 in Berrien County

The next phase of the $27 million construction project on M-51 (11th Street) in Niles includes opening one lane in each direction starting Monday. Construction crews will continue reconstructing the northbound lanes between M-60 BR and US 12 through the end of August.

In addition, work is ongoing on US 12 in the area between West River Road and M-60, which has required the closure of individual lanes since last fall.

I-696 in Oakland County

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, only one westbound lane on I-696 will be open between Evergreen Road and Franklin Road as workers divert traffic to the newly constructed eastbound lanes.

Temporary ramp closures are required for drivers wishing to exit US 24 southbound onto I-696 westbound and M-10 northbound onto I-696 westbound. During the ramp closures, traffic will be detoured via 12 Mile Road to M-5 to I-96 and I-275.

M-10 in Oakland County

The left lane in each direction is scheduled for closures this week between 8 Mile Road and I-696. The closures may impact evening traffic as they are scheduled from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily through Wednesday morning.

I-75 in Oakland County

The northbound freeway will experience one-lane overnight closures between Girard Avenue and Coolidge Road this week. Closures are scheduled for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Likewise, southbound I-75 between Coolidge Road and 13 Mile Road will experience closures on the same schedule.

Old US 27 in Clinton County

The ramps from old US 27 to I-69 will be closed from 7 a.m. Monday to 3 p.m. Wednesday. In addition, one lane of I-69 will remain closed in each direction between old US 27 and US 127.

M-1 in Wayne County

Another construction project will begin Monday on Woodward Avenue (M-1). The construction site is located between 7 Mile Road and McNichols Road in both directions, near the Detroit Golf Club. Closures are planned daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the next four weeks.

Also in Woodward, one lane of Quarton Road will be closed on Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

US 131 in Kent County

The left lane of US 131 between I-96 and Ann Street in Grand Rapids will be closed for construction from 7 a.m. Tuesday to approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday. A lane shift will remain in place on I-96.

Special occasions

More than a dozen road closures are planned for special events this week, most of them related to Independence Day celebrations. Some of these closures will occur on M-25 in Bay County, M-15 in Oakland County, M-90 in Lapeer County, M-71 in Shiawassee County, M-50 in Eaton County, M-81 in Tuscola County, M-29 in St. Clair County, and M-46/M-25 in Sanilac County.
