Shakira admits she thinks she has “overdone” the yodeling of her voice: “Too much Shakira”

The Colombian superstar, who just released her 12th studio album, talked about what she finds “embarrassing” about her old music

Shakira’s hips don’t lie, and neither does she when it comes to delivering hot renditions of her own music!

The Colombian superstar, 47, appeared in a recent episode of First We Feast’s Name is and talked about what she finds a bit embarrassing about her old music today. Although the hitmaker confidently said she feels she has evolved a lot as an artist over the years, she also admitted that she believes she “overdid” her trademark yodeling in early tracks.

Shakira was talking about vocal technique when host Sean Evans asked her what made her “cringe or wince” when listening to her old music.

“So many things,” she replied.

“I think I overdid it with the screaming in my voice before,” the “She Wolf” singer continued, breaking into a brief yodel and laughing at herself.

“I think it was over the top,” Shakira remarked about her old music. “A bit baroque. You know?”

“Too much Shakira,” she added jokingly.

The Latin pop phenomenon then revealed why she thinks her voice sounds much stronger today. “I noticed that after my pregnancies my voice became thicker, rounder and fuller,” said the mother of two. (Shakira has two sons, Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, with her ex-partner Gerard Piqué.)

“Besides, my decisions are more my responsibility. I have evolved as a woman, as a human being, my intellect has evolved,” said the Grammy winner.

Evans, 37, shared on Name is that he wanted to specifically ask Shakira what she notices about her old music, since she recently made comments in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 saying that she “used to suck.”

The “Waka Waka” singer was being a bit joking, but said that she often thinks about how much her voice has developed when her music is on the radio and that she makes her two sons aware of these changes.

“I feel like my voice keeps changing over the years and I tell that to my (sons Milan and Sasha),” Shakira said at the time. “Sometimes I listen to my own music with them. Not intentionally, it just happens, you know, maybe one song, another one comes on the playlist or on the radio or whatever.”

“I say, ‘I used to suck. But I think I’ve evolved,'” the “Whenever, Wherever” singer continued. “I like myself a lot more as an artist now, but that’s just me.”

The Latin Grammy winner also admitted that she understands that some fans liked her early work the most, but believes that she has “matured” the most stylistically and as an artist in recent years.

Shakira recently released her 12th studio album Women Don’t Let Go on March 22nd. The project includes hits such as “Te Felicito” with Rauw Alejandro, “Monotonía” with Ozuna, “Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Bizarrap and “TQG” with Karol G.

A press release described the record as encompassing the singer-songwriter’s “resilience and strength” and the “power of music to transform even the most difficult experiences into precious moments.”

“The creation of this work was an alchemical process,” Shakira said in a statement. “As I wrote each song, I rebuilt myself. As I sang them, my tears turned into diamonds and my vulnerability turned into strength.”

Not only is Women Don’t Let Go the star’s first LP in seven years, after 2017 El Doradoit follows her split from her long-term partner, 37, in 2022.
