Warner Bros is building a “Lego” sequel directed by Chris McKay

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has hired Chris McKay as director for the sequel to The Lego Movie, The film was released last month and has grossed $361 million worldwide so far. McKay co-directed the animation on the first film, which was directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. That duo is producing, and Michelle Morgan and Jared Stern are writing a treatment for the next installment. They’re still working on all of that, but this will be a direct sequel, although the studio is considering a spinoff film that expands the Lego empire by focusing on the Ninjago character.

At the same time, McKay is also negotiating a first-look producer deal with the studio. Dan Lin and Roy Lee are also producing. Who is McKay? The Chicago native got his start mixing animation and irreverence on the small screen, winning an Emmy for his work on Cartoon Network’s Robot Chickenin which he directed over 40 episodes, and the film Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode 3He also directed and produced Titanium Maximum for Adult Swim. The sequel is being produced by Courtenay Valenti for Warner Bros and executive produced by Lego’s Jill Wilfert.

McKay is represented by UTA, Mosaic and attorney Jeff Endlich.
