Popular long-time radio presenter of Mix 98.1 dies

RICHMOND, Virginia – Kat Simons, the popular longtime Richmond radio host who advocated for animals and a number of charitable causes and organizations, has died, according to WTVR-FM.

“She was more than a voice on the radio. She was a valued friend and a comforting presence, always ready with a kind word or a nice question with genuine curiosity,” said a post on Mix 98.1’s website.

Simons served as a midday DJ for more than 25 years for the station, which was known for decades as Lite 98.

“Kat’s life was a symphony of kindness and devotion that resonated across Virginia’s airwaves,” colleagues wrote.

WTVR CBS 6 reporter Greg McQuade remembered Simons as a “true friend to four-legged animals who needed a permanent home in Central Virginia.”

“She was a legend,” McQuade wrote. “Kat was a gem and a devoted soul. For years she faithfully assisted me in competitions in the ring at the Henrico Humane Society’s Pet Expo.”

Reba Hollingsworth, morning anchor at WTVR CBS 6, said that although she hasn’t seen Simons in person in several years, she often hears her velvety voice on Mix 98.1.

“She gave me a big, warm hug and said the kindest words,” Hollingsworth wrote. “I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing. She was a beautiful soul. RVA will miss you, Kat.”

Antoinette Essa, longtime community events reporter for WTVR CBS 6, remembered Simon as “always genuine and kind.”

“I met Kat many years ago when we hosted events together as radio sisters,” Essa wrote. “What a tremendous loss.”

Tracy Sears, longtime reporter and Sunday night anchor at WTVR CBS 6, called Simon a “true advocate” and “a gracious presence.”

“She always made you feel like you were the only person in the room when she spoke to you, giving you a sweet compliment and words of encouragement,” Sears wrote. “My heart breaks for her family and the Richmond community, as we were her extended family. Heaven has gained a beautiful voice and soul.”

Simons grew up in Elkins, West Virginia, where her love of the animals on her family farm led her to support local animal rescue groups throughout her life.

“Her efforts touched numerous organizations including Richmond and Hanover ARC, Relay for Life, VA, USO, Alzheimer’s Association, Arthritis Association, SPARC, Faison, Children’s Hospital, the READ Center and the Diabetes Association,” radio station officials wrote.

Simons was remembered for her “generous nature” and for “surprising many with spontaneous acts of kindness, gifts of money, gift cards and thoughtful birthday cards.”

“She was a constant companion whether at work or at home. Her presence was always a source of comfort and joy,” employees wrote. “Kat’s legacy of love and kindness will forever resonate in our hearts. Thank you for everything, Kat.”
