Anuel AA dedicates a heartbreaking new song to ex Karol G on their anniversary

Anuel AA means keeping it honest, “Hasta la Muerte,” even when it comes to heartbreak.

The Puerto Rican superstar shows a more vulnerable side of himself after releasing an emotional new single titled “23 Preguntas.” Rauw Alejandro.

The gentle, melodic melody even seems to refer to his previous relationship with Karol Gwith whom he was engaged for almost two years before the two split up in March 2021. What’s more, Anuel released the melancholic music video and song on the day he and Karol would have celebrated their anniversary.

In the song itself, Anuel asks his ex-fiancée a series of heartbreaking questions, with chilling lyrics like: “So many fights you wanna cut me out of your life/Seriously, tell me if it’s not worth sitting and listening to me any longer/Wake me up from this nightmare.”

The Latinx musician also compares his and Karol’s romance to well-known public figures and controversial moments in pop culture.

“We will die together like Mary Todd And Lincoln/We’ll break up like Billups from the Pistons,” he sings, adding: “We’re real, but not like Monica Lewinsky when they caught her hiding Clinton.”

He adds: “Do you love me? Or is your love for sale?/Will you stay with me when my bank balance is zero?”

On Instagram, Anuel announced his new song and talked about his personal connection to the lyrics and their meaning.

“August 23, 23 Questions!!!!!! A time that never passes!!!!!!!” The 28-year-old musician captioned his post, which translates to “August 23, 23 Preguntas… A date I will never forget.”

In his message, he also stated: “This song has true meaning for me… (and) gives you access to my heart.”

Although reports emerged in March that Anuel and Karol had decided to go their separate ways, the two did not comment on the speculation until April.

During an Instagram Live, Anuel confirmed that he and the Colombian singer had broken off their engagement.

“The truth is we are not together,” the Latin trap artist said in a now-deleted post. Billboard“People always saw us together because we still love each other. We tried to find what was lost, but we went our separate ways. May God bless her and keep her pursuing her dreams and goals.”

He added: “There is no negativity between us. We have a great relationship.”

“The incredible things that have happened to us as people and artists have been a blessing and the result of a wonderful love that came into our lives when we needed it most,” she continued. “I love you, Emmanuel, my gratitude to you, your family and everything we have experienced, grown up and learned together is endless.”

Anuel is not the only one who mentions their love story. Karol published it KG0515 album earlier this year and hinted at how their romance was blossoming in the track “Ay DiOs Mío”.

The two first met on the set of the “Culpables” music video in 2018, fueling relationship rumors. They kept fans guessing until the fall, when they announced they were dating on Anuel’s birthday in November.

A year later, they confirmed their engagement during their debut as a couple on the red carpet of the 2019 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

“I’m super excited, everything was so special and we’re having the best time,” said Karol Entertainment tonight back then. “Between our music and everything we go through with our love, everything is great.”
