One hundred-year-old carriages from the Orient Express fleet make up the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, Belmond’s new edition of the legendary luxury sleeper train. With 60 routes in 17 cities, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is perhaps the most luxurious train in Europe. Prices start at $9,000 per night.
The train’s best accommodation is a Grand Suite. These rooms start at $26,000 a night and come with luxurious touches and amenities not found in any other cabin on board, from a private shower to 24-hour butler service.
Business Insider recently took a tour of the rooms, where a cabin steward explained the details of each suite.
Take a look inside the train’s most extravagant cabins and experience the luxury journey of a lifetime.
The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is the epitome of luxurious rail travel in Europe.
Guests are greeted on red carpets for their nighttime ride, with lavishly decorated vintage carriages, fine dining and breathtaking views of the passing scenery.
The train has six large suites – each with a unique design.
Grand Suites represent the third category of accommodation – one level above a suite and two levels above a historic cottage.
Each Grand Suite is inspired by a city along the train’s routes, including Venice, Vienna, Istanbul, Budapest and Prague.
They all feature a sofa, a double bed that can be converted into two single beds, a dining area and a private full bathroom.
All six have a full bathroom with a rain shower head.
Each bathroom features a blown glass sink, heated marble floor and a rain shower head.
Grand Suite guests also receive complimentary bathrobes and slippers.
There is a closet next to each bathroom with additional storage space so guests can fully unpack and feel at home.
Each also has a dining area.
Grand Suite guests are greeted with caviar upon arrival and can, if they prefer, dine in their room rather than in the dining car.
They also received 24-hour butler service and unlimited champagne for the entire trip, the cabin steward told BI.
The Venice Grand Suite combines Italian Baroque and Renaissance design.
Venetian furniture, vintage glass light fixtures and a combination of silk and woven fabrics give this suite a historic Italian feel. Navy blue velvet echoes the train’s exterior.
The headboard with its combination of arches and sharp edges is reminiscent of the Renaissance castles in Italy.
Emerald green and gold details characterize the Vienna Suite.
The suite has a classic ambience with dark wood and contrasting gold trim.
According to a Belmond fact sheet obtained by BI, the back of the headboard is made of silk to convey a sense of elegance. Its curved shape and tassel details in the bed skirt may remind travelers of the historic city’s royal palaces.
The Istanbul Suite feels like a Turkish palace.
The gleaming, hand-carved wood from the furniture to the walls is a work of art. For anyone who has ever been to the Turkish city of Istanbul, the embossed leather and fabric embroidery may bring back memories of the city’s opulent offerings at the famous and historic Grand Bazaar.
The Budapest Suite was inspired by Gothic and Ottoman architectural styles.
The Budapest Suite is decorated with intricate inlay work and furniture with embroidered silk patterns. The high, curved headboard may remind travelers of Gothic cathedrals and mosques from the Ottoman Empire.
The Paris Suite is designed to evoke a romantic atmosphere.
Inspired by the city’s architecture, the Paris Suite features a geometric headboard and detailed wood inlay, reminiscent of Art Deco elements, classical facades and the city’s high-fashion reputation.
Finally, the Prague Suite is a nod to the city’s theatre culture.
Maroon and gold are the colors of the Prague Suite, giving travelers a sense of the city’s theater scene. Cubist-style mosaic patterns adorn the walls, and hand-embroidered pillows add luxurious touches to the decor.
