Who won “The Voice”? Everything about season 25 champion Asher HaVon

Asher HaVon was crowned “The Voice” champion in May 2024, marking the first win for Team Reba

Asher HaVon celebrated a historic victory as champion of the The voice Season 25.

The Alabama-born singer became the first openly LGBTQ+ singer to win the show in its 13-year history, securing the first victory for Team Reba.

“I’m so proud to be a part of this community and I just pray that everything I did on this show inspired them all to do the same,” he said Entertainment tonight after his victory on May 21st.

HaVon took the crown after singing Patti LaBelle’s “On My Own” with his coach Reba McEntire. He impressed her – and two other coaches – in the blind auditions with his rendition of Adele’s “Set Fire to the Rain.”

“Asher, what an incredible voice you have. Your range, your power, I couldn’t wait to turn around and see what you looked like. And you didn’t disappoint at all. That’s how it goes,” McEntire said after his performance.

HaVon is a proud Alabamian who grew up in Selma and has often spoken about how important the city was to his development as a person and an artist.

Before the finals, HaVon’s hometown gathered for a party to support him from afar.

“I will participate in the Watch Party in a special way this time with my hometown,” said HaVon Selma Sun Days before he won the competition. “I am sending an audio-visual message of love from me personally… I love my city so much and I am grateful that my city loves me too.”

He sang at a young age

Encouraged by his mother, HaVon began singing at the age of five. In elementary school, his teacher Joslyn Reddick showed him how to sing in the classroom and he never looked back, Selma Sun.

HaVon grew up as a gospel singer in church, which influenced his current style as a pop and R&B musician.

He has performed for President Barack Obama

When former President Barack Obama came to Selma for the 50th anniversary of the Selma-Montgomery March for equal voting rights in 1965, HaVon auditioned for a spot in the choir to sing John Legend’s “Glory” from the film. Selma, according to his NBC biography.

Not only was he accepted into the choir, but he was also chosen to lead it in front of the 200,000 people gathered.

“I thought someone was playing with me,” said HaVon The Selma Times Journal in March 2024. “Singing in front of President Obama is a big deal in our culture. I was nervous until I got on stage.”

He is completely himself

Competing in a group of the most talented singers is a challenge for anyone, but HaVon had an ace up his sleeve: he wanted to focus on authenticity.

“When it comes to performing, I’m always the best version of myself,” HaVon told PEOPLE about what’s most important to him as he broke into the Top 9. “A secret that’s so loud, yet can constantly be overlooked.”

His goal throughout the season was to show viewers what he can do vocally and to stay true to himself and his abilities, he said parade before the final.

“You know what? I just want to sing, darling,” he said. “It’s called The voice and I’m just going to try to keep rocking that vocal. I just want to keep producing the biggest ballads in the world.”

He became close to his trainer Reba McEntire

One of HaVon’s most appreciated achievements during his time on The voice is his relationship with his country superstar coach. After the first live show of the season, HaVon told PEOPLE that he considers McEntire another “mom” since he grew up as an only child with a single mother.

“She’s a mother and she’s a mother to all of us,” he said of McEntire’s relationship with her team. “She shares her heart, she shares her wisdom, she shares her experience. She’s a rock that I’m always happy to stand on.”

After the victory, HaVon said: ET that he cried during most of his sessions with McEntire, as she had mentored him throughout the season.

“Thank you to Mama @Reba,” he wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of himself hugging McEntire as he was declared the winner. “You changed my life and created a milestone in my life that I will have forever. I am your son for life ❤️.”

His self-confidence grew after the competition The voice

Before joining The voiceHaVon hadn’t sung for two years and his confidence was at an all-time low. Between the playoffs and the live shows, when he was back home, HaVon told parade that he checked his emails frequently to make sure they were still authentic because he couldn’t believe he would be coming back for the Top 20.

“I was very unsure about many things in life, including my voice,” he said. “I didn’t feel worthy of being here. I thought it was a joke. I thought they felt sorry for me. They heard my sad story and put me on the show.”

For HaVon, however, the three-chair turn was a defining moment. He said it was the “biggest validation” he’d ever received. He added that when McEntire turned around, he felt “safe” after seeing her “warm” smile.

“From ‘Blinds’ to now, I definitely feel like I’m where I belong. My confidence has grown,” HaVon told the outlet. “I’m believing in myself more and more. I told the producer, ‘I think I’m cured on national television.'”
