Sixth annual Hill of Heroes celebration draws hundreds to Virginia War Memorial

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — On Saturday, the Virginia War Memorial hosted its annual Day of the Hill of Heroes Hundreds gathered at the memorial service to pay tribute to the American servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The event took place on the hills of the memorial and included moving presentations and activities honoring veterans from World War II to the present.

The centerpiece of the commemoration was the presentation of 12,000 American flags, symbolizing the citizens of Virginia who have lost their lives in war since World War II.

Families, veterans and community members of all ages attended the event, now in its sixth consecutive year, to participate in a variety of activities and reflect on the meaning of service and sacrifice.

“I think it’s just a great event. We brought our grandchildren so they could see the 12,000 flags out there on the hill,” said Tina Burkett, an event participant.

The event included military demonstrations, including historic military vehicles, and military dogs demonstrating their skills to the crowd.

Live music filled the air as visitors explored a used book sale and browsed information booths, including the Library of Virginia, which offered access to records of fallen soldiers.

For many participants, including Burkett, whose daughter currently serves in the Air Force, the event had personal meaning.

“I have a child in the military, so my group, Blue Star Families of Richmond, comes here often,” Burkett said. “I like it, and they seem to like it, too, so we’ll definitely be back.”

The partnership between the Virginia War Memorial and the Library of Virginia highlighted the educational aspect of the event. The library assisted visitors in locating records of deceased veterans, ensuring that their legacy is preserved and honored.

The Hill of Heroes Memorial Ceremony, held the weekend before Independence Day, commemorates the sacrifices made by servicemen and women throughout American history. As the visitors departed, the hills, decorated in red, white and blue, served as a powerful symbol of remembrance.
