Pedro Pascal talks about his heartbreak in the song “Omar Apollo”

None of us is immune to heartbreak – just ask Hollywood star Pedro Pascal.

The “Mandalorian” and “Last of Us” star contributed a spoken voice memo to Omar Apollo’s aptly titled song “Pedro,” which premiered Friday on the artist’s new album, “God Said No.”

Most of the track is dominated by a two-minute-plus vocal recording that actor Apollo sent about a devastating experience he had during the holiday season in the midst of the COVID pandemic. The message is so personal that he concludes it by saying, “I can’t believe I’m sending you this.”

Pascal was traveling from Budapest to Switzerland looking for a job during Europe’s second wave of COVID. He was “too scared to go back to the U.S.” and suffering from a heart that was “pretty shattered by something,” he said.

“I remember walking. I think it must have been Lucerne,” he said in the message. “I remember thinking, ‘It brought me to my knees,’ and it was this kind of residential area. And I remember literally being brought to my knees by a park bench.”

“And I remember asking the park bench to come to life and save me because I felt like there would be no more moments after that,” he said.

“But it did exist. It did exist.”

As of Saturday, Pascal had not publicly commented on the song. Apollo worked with producers Teo Halm, Carter Lang and Blake Slatkin at Abbey Road Studios in London, as well as studios in Los Angeles, Miami and New York to create his latest project.

Speaking to Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Apollo reflected on “Pedro” and shared how Pascal came into the album’s mix.

“I played him ‘Glow’ and the song is about grief and the complexity of grief. I had this idea that it would be really beautiful if he told a story about grief – a colossal loss,” Apollo said, adding, “He sent a voice message. It’s a very beautiful story. It’s very heartbreaking.”

In an interview with GQ in May, Pascal also spoke about his friendship with Apollo after it was announced that he would appear in some capacity in the upcoming project.

“Omar is a very good friend of mine. I love his music. He also grew up bilingual like me. He loves Corona, I experienced Corona with him,” he said. “And so I love being a friend on each other’s journeys and supporting them creatively wherever I can and supporting them in their creative experiences as a friend, as an artist, as a Latino and as a Spanish-speaking person. It just means a lot to me.”

“God Said No” has been hailed as deeply personal and emotional. In each of its 14 songs, Apollo grapples with the end of a two-year relationship that left him devastated. In “Life’s Unfair,” he claims, “I would have married you,” but in “Against Me,” he makes it clear that “you know I’m the worst bitch,” before admitting, “I’ve changed so much, but did you hear it?/ I can’t move like I used to.”
