MINNEAPOLIS – Fred Richard doesn’t just want to win the Olympic qualification.

He is trying to make a statement.

Richard, the all-around bronze medalist at last year’s world championships, extended his lead with a monster high bar performance. The crowd oohed and ahhed at his big dismounts, and he roared as he landed his dismount. His score of 14.45 is the highest yet in the event and is reassuring for the U.S. men, for whom high bar is one of the weaker events.

Richard has 114,850 points after two events, putting him a full point ahead of Asher Hong. Shane Wiskus continues to wow the crowd in his hometown and continues to fight for a spot on the five-man team.

National champion Brody Malone is in fifth place, but just completed one of his weaker events, the floor exercise, and should improve in the final four events.

MINNEAPOLIS – It’s going to be a big afternoon for Khoi Young and he couldn’t have asked for a better start.

On his first jump of the day, the reigning World Championship silver medalist surpassed his results from the first day of trials and both days of the national championships, reaching 15,100m with a near-perfect execution score (9.50 out of 10). While that didn’t help him much in the two-day all-around standings, where he is ranked 11th, it can only improve his chances of getting back on the Olympic scene.

Young’s teammate at Stanford, Asher Hong, also scored high on vault (15.250) to start the day, while Frederick Richard extended his lead with a solid performance on parallel bars. Reigning national champion Brody Malone slipped to third place after an uncharacteristic fall on one of his best events, the high bar.

MINNEAPOLIS – Brody Malone joins Simone Biles’ tour.

Malone’s name has been added to the roster of gymnasts for the Gold Over America Tour, joining Frederick Richard and Casimir Schmidt of the Netherlands. There were no male gymnasts left on the tour after the Tokyo Olympics, and Biles told The Associated Press she wanted to focus on empowering women.

“This time we thought, ‘OK, that worked, but let’s do it a little differently and invite the men,'” she said.

The 30-city tour begins on September 17 and runs until November 3.

Who will make the US Olympic gymnastics team?

If Brody Malone performs at the trials similar to what he did at the US Championships in early June, he’ll be on his way to Paris. The same goes for Fred Richard, who finished second at the national championships, first on floor exercise and second on high bar. Khoi Young could have made the team with a strong performance at the trials, but his first appearance was a disaster.

The contenders are Tokyo Olympians Yul Moldauer and Shane Wiskus, Paul Juda, a member of last year’s world team, and Donnell Whittenburg, a two-time world championship medalist and 2016 alternate. Also keep an eye on Cameron Bock, Colt Walker and Asher Hong.

If the selection committee decides that the horse is solid enough in other areas but needs a high score on the pommel horse, the choice could fall on Stephen Nedoroscik, the 2021 world champion in that discipline, or Patrick Hoopes.

Khoi Young and his fights at US Olympic Gymnastics Qualification Competitions

Khoi Young was considered a sure-fire candidate for the Olympic team. He was the best non-specialist on the U.S. men’s pommel horse and one of the few American medalists in that discipline at the World Championships.

But now he has had to dismount twice in three nights of competition at the US Championships and Olympic Trials. His 11.65 on Thursday night, after he dismounted twice during his routine, was the worst result of the competition in this discipline.

Young, the reigning NCAA champion, also struggled on the high bar and rings and is ranked 12th tonight. The only event he did well in was the vault, where he is the reigning world championship silver medalist. His 14.95 was the highest score in that event Thursday night.

Frederick Richard at the US Olympic gymnastics trials

Frederick Richard was all smiles as he left the floor with his fists clenched Thursday night. Richard, the reigning world championship bronze medalist, had every reason to celebrate. His amazing floor routine had put him at the top of the overall standings after the first night of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials with a score of 85.600, just ahead of three-time national champion Brody Malone.
