Kevin Costner reflects on his role in “Man of Steel” and the controversial death scene

During the press work for his new film, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1Kevin Costner reflected on his role as Pa Kent in “Man of Steel” and addressed the controversial death of his character.

According to Cinemablend, Costner took time to talk about his role in Zack Snyder’sman of Steel while doing the ReelBlend podcast to promote his new Western epic. While Costner delivers an emotionally charged performance as Clark Kent’s adoptive father, he jokingly laments that he doesn’t have any superpowers in the film.I’m just lucky to be in a superhero movie and be the only normal person.” said Costner. “I thought, “Really? I can’t fly? And I can’t make my first punch through the wall? Maybe I should have read this more carefully.. I’m a farmer?’ So I looked at that and said, ‘Okay, I can be that.’ I thought that was rooted in doubt.”

Costner would also address his character’s controversial death in the film, which sparked much debate among fans as to whether his sacrifice was necessary. In the scene in question, the Kent family is driving down a highway when they encounter a forming tornado. As they make their way to the overpass to shelter from the tornado, Jonathan instructs Clark to stay with his mother while he tries to save the family dog, Hank. He succeeds in freeing the dog, but does not have enough time to escape the clutches of the raging tornado. In his final moments, he motions to Clark not to use his powers to save him, as he readily accepts his death. Costner commented on his controversial death, saying, “But there was no doubt that he raised his hand and said to his son: “Stay there”.”

Jonathan dies to protect Clark’s identity

Jonathan’s death is controversial because Clark easily could have saved his father and probably should have been the one to free their dog as well. However, thematically, Jonathan’s sacrifice makes sense. Throughout most of the film up until his unfortunate death, Jonathan emphasizes to Clark his unease with humanity if it ever discovered Clark’s true nature. He feared that humanity would decide Clark’s fate and feared how it would react to a being as powerful as him. In his final moments, Jonathan decides to sacrifice himself to protect Clark’s identity until Clark feels ready to reveal himself to the world.
