Highlights
- The contract deadline for Chris Paul has been pushed back a few days to allow for further opportunities for trade transactions.
- The Golden State Warriors could waive Paul as a last resort and thus provide much-needed relief on the salary cap.
- Paul’s average performance last season could lead to a possible trade.
Chris Paul has had his fair share of NBA appearances, and this offseason is no exception. The veteran point guard, currently with the Golden State Warriors, has never been a good fit for the team, and word has emerged that the Warriors are exploring ways to sign him and may even release him.
Paul has $30 million guaranteed in his contract for the 2024-25 season. According to a new report from ESPN, the Warriors intend to move the deadline to sign him until the start of free agency on Sunday to give them more time to consider a trade. The original deadline was last Friday.
Waiver possible
The Warriors could also release Paul, but that is only a last resort
The report also suggested that the Warriors could waive Paul if they cannot find a suitable suitor, which would give the team major salary cap relief. However, this will only be a last resort as the Warriors want to make sure they find a permanent place for the veteran point guard.
The Warriors acquired Paul, 39, from the Washington Wizards last season in exchange for Jordan Poole. While talented, Poole never really fit with the Warriors due to player chemistry issues, particularly around Draymond Green.
Poole and Green got into an altercation at practice a few seasons ago, and Poole’s tenure with Golden State was never the same afterward. Meanwhile, Paul no longer fit in with the Wizards, who were in the process of regrouping, and joined the Warriors to try and get something going.
Average statistics
Paul was at best average as a substitute for the Warriors last season
The spark ultimately failed to ignite. Despite only being with the Warriors for one season, he was unable to make a difference. Last season, he averaged just 9.2 points per game, but his 3.9 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game were adequate for a player his age.

He also shot 44.1 percent from the field and 37.1 percent from three-pointers. That was in 58 games, mostly as a substitute. If the Warriors were to trade him, his contract would have to be factored in, which would complicate the deal.
Ultimately, the Warriors have just one day left to decide what to do with Paul before free agency begins on Sunday, June 30. He’s entering his 40th season and only time will tell how much of the legend is left on the court.
