Guest Commentary: Stop the radical one-party agenda in the Capitol – Brainerd Dispatch

The 93rd legislative session under full Democratic control of the Capitol adjourned in May – and for many Minnesotans, it couldn’t happen soon enough.

People are regretting it as they realize how much the radical left has taken over the Democratic Party in both the House and Senate. Democrats have spent the last two years implementing the far-left activists’ wish list on budgetary and policy issues – and Governor Tim Walz has fulfilled that wish.

Today’s Democratic Party is no longer the Democratic Farmer-Labor Party of your parents. Here’s a look at some of its activities during this two-year period:

  • HF 1 allows abortions up to the time of birth and permits the sterilization of underage children without the knowledge of their parents.
  • HF 146 (Transgender Sanctuary State for Minors) allows for gender mutilation to be performed on minors living in other states without parental permission being required. (Any adult who brings a minor to Minnesota for “gender-affirming care” will not be prosecuted for kidnapping in Minnesota.)
  • HF 181 undermines our First Amendment freedom of speech by adding a government-managed/monitored registry of biased speech.
  • HF 7 makes our electricity grid unaffordable, unreliable and insecure by requiring that our electricity must come only from wind turbines and solar panels by 2040.
  • HF 2073 provides free college for illegal immigrants in Minnesota.
  • HF 4 issues a driver’s license to all illegal immigrants (which could be an incentive for illegal immigrants to flock to our state).
  • HF 3 implements automatic voter registration for everyone who gets a driver’s license. Combined with HF 4 mentioned above, this could lead to massive problems with the integrity of the election.
  • HF 4772 allows you to provide a description of your place of residence instead of a physical address for voter registration purposes.

I am deeply concerned that today’s Democrats’ agenda is destroying our beloved state. Here is a list of Democrats’ bills that fortunately didn’t make it across the finish line last session, but will surely be pushed forward if they retain full control of the Capitol:

  • HF 2666 launches an 18-month program that provides $500 a month to people on guaranteed minimum income, including illegal immigrants who meet certain income guidelines. The appropriation is $100 million, and billions are needed to continue it.
  • HF 0396 and HF 4300 violate our Second Amendment rights by restricting our right to bear arms in our own homes.
  • HF 267 abolishes the crime of knowingly transmitting sexually transmitted diseases to another person.
  • HF 4590 adds a constitutional amendment to make the Minnesota Legislature a full-time legislature.
  • HF 2860 makes Minnesota a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants.

We haven’t even mentioned the Democrats’ relentless attacks on religious freedom. Or how they squandered the state’s $18 billion budget surplus, raised taxes by nearly $10 billion, and expanded the state apparatus by nearly 40% – all while spending $730 million to renovate the State Office Building for politicians.

Republicans will continue to advocate for other priorities to help all Minnesotans, including:

  • Make child care more affordable for all by removing unnecessary government regulations on child care providers.
  • It will give independent school districts more flexibility to use their financial resources to best educate children, and put an end to the one-size-fits-all, city-centered approach to public education.
  • The governor’s emergency powers must be expanded so that they can no longer be abused to violate our civil and religious liberties.
  • Tax cuts for the hard-working middle class and a reduction in public spending while fully funding nursing homes and essential emergency services in our rural areas.
  • Developing energy independence by lifting the nuclear moratorium in favour of truly clean and reliable energy.
  • Protecting children and families by strengthening parental rights and freedom of education.
  • Minnesota is to be made a mining-friendly state and mining licensing reform is to be introduced.
  • Restoring law and order and supporting our brave men and women in law enforcement.
  • We honor our veterans with better benefits and better health care.
  • Conducting fair and honest elections for legitimate citizens.
  • Removing inappropriate and unnecessary burdens on our farmers and job creators.
  • Stop the countless attacks on our constitutional rights.

It’s time to restore balance to our state government. It’s not too late for Minnesota to turn things around.
