Sparta woman killed in Clinton County traffic accident

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (WOOD) – A Sparta woman was killed Wednesday in a traffic crash on I-96 in Clinton County that also involved three other people from Kent County.

At approximately 1:50 p.m., Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched to I-96 westbound near Grange Road for a crash involving two cars and two semi-trailers.

Troopers learned that a 2019 International semi-truck driven by a 33-year-old Grand Rapids man was traveling westbound in the right lane on I-96. It appeared that he had not slowed down because traffic had come to a standstill for construction. The semi-truck struck a 2017 Chevy Cruze driven by a 74-year-old Sparta woman. The Chevy then struck a 2020 Land Rover driven by a 62-year-old Rockford woman. The Land Rover then struck a 2014 Freightliner semi-truck driven by a 23-year-old Grand Rapids man.

MSP said the Land Rover rolled into a ditch and the Chevy Cruze was crushed between the two semi-trucks.

The woman from Sparta has died, MSP said.

The 33-year-old man from Grand Rapids and the woman from Rockford were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Their condition has not been released.

Westbound I-96 was closed for several hours Wednesday while emergency crews investigated and cleared the scene.
