Charlie Woods comes to Michigan to play in the US Junior Amateur

Three decades ago, Tiger Woods first made a name for himself as a golf phenomenon when he won three consecutive U.S. Junior Amateur titles from 1991 to 1993.

Now his son wants to come to Michigan to try his luck in the tournament for the first time.

Charlie Woods qualified on Wednesday to compete in the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur next month at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills.

Woods, 15, will be part of the 256-player field that will compete in what is considered the country’s most prestigious tournament for players under 18 from July 22-27, 2024. He earned his spot by shooting a medal-winning 71 (one under par) in a qualifying match at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Florida.

His presence will bring star power to the fairways of the famous South Course in Oakland Hills. Charlie Woods’ swing and game have been analyzed by golf fans for years as a potential future star. His father, the legendary 15-time major winner, often accompanies his son to tournaments and sometimes acts as his caddy.

Charlie Woods has played four times with his father in the PNC Championship, a two-person tournament where major champions play alongside a family member. Other than that, his career has been limited to junior tour events; the U.S. Junior Amateur will be the most prestigious event he has qualified for.

The Junior Amateur will be the tournament debut of Oakland Hills’ renovated South Course. After hosting six US Opens, three PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup between 1924 and 2004, the course underwent a major renovation and reopened for play in 2021. It is now scheduled to host eight more USGA tournaments, including the US Open in 2034 and 2051.
