Chris Pratt’s “Garfield: The Movie” receives weak Rotten Tomatoes rating

Chris Pratt’s “Garfield Movie” did not fare particularly well on Rotten Tomatoes.

Coming to theaters this week, the lazy cat of the title experiences an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father Vic, who takes him and his best friend Odie on a risky robbery.

At the time of writing, the film has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 56%.

The animated film also features Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Waddingham, Nicholas Hoult and Snoop Dogg, but critics say the film misses the point of the iconic cat.

Below you will find a selection of these indifferent opinions from the press.

The Hollywood Reporter

“The rudimentary animation does the film no favors, nor does the lead voice of Pratt, who, oddly enough, has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after animation stars with Onward, The Lego Movie and its sequel, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. His bland vocal work here pales in comparison to his predecessors Bill Murray, who voiced the character in the two live-action films, and Lorenzo Music, who played it brilliantly on television for so many years. The strange result is a Garfield without attitude.”

The Wrap

“The surprising thing about Garfield’s movie is that, although it’s based on a fairly cynical comic strip, its high points are all sentimental. The flashbacks to Garfield’s childhood as a kitten are shameless low blows full of maudlin cuteness, but they ultimately break down the defenses. Garfield’s relationship with his father ends up being genuinely sympathetic. What the movie lacks in hilarious jokes – there are few (watch out for the used catapult salesman) – it makes up for in good nature.”

“The hectic plot might keep younger minds from wandering. Long before the film reaches its action-packed, train-based climax, however, adults will be wondering if the three writers have even seen a real Garfield comic strip, given how far removed their work feels from its action-shy inspiration.”

diversity

“The lasagna-obsessed cat with an almost pathological aversion to montages, who first came to public attention as a comic strip in the late 1970s, is a watered-down version of himself in the Garfield film.

“Not only is his polite apathy largely replaced by excessive excitement, with his lovable negative qualities only sporadically emerging, but this Garfield also jumps off trains, stages a robbery and is subjected to hackneyed physical comedy in the form of numerous predictable action sequences. The ordeal imitates a rehashed plot from the boring Pets series, into which Garfield is forced.”

The Garfield movie will be released in theaters on May 24th.
