Mets and Jose Iglesias deliver an “OMG” performance at Citi Field event

OMG! The Mets are obsessed with their teammate’s hot new track.

During an event Thursday night at Citi Field, Mets players showed their excitement for Jose Iglesias’ new single “OMG” by participating in his live performance.

Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, JDMartinez, Mark Vientos and other teammates surrounded Iglesias – who performs musically under the name Candelita – as the chorus began.

Not only does Iglesias achieve a .400 batting average and six RBIs in his debut season with the Mets, the backup infielder also gains recognition as an up-and-coming artist.

Iglesias first introduced the song to his teammates when he used it as his walk-on song after joining the club in late May.

It has now become an integral part of the team.

The Mets — who are back to .500 with a 39-39 record after two Subway Series wins over the Yankees — have played in the locker room after each win.

They have even introduced choreographed hand movements to sync up with their teammate’s new tune, which can be seen after home runs or good plays.

“We sing it, we hum it all the time,” reliever Adam Ottavino said, according to The Athletic. “This one definitely made the biggest impression in the locker room.”

José Iglesias speaks with Mets reporter Steve Gelbs on SNY about the release of his single “OMG” on Friday.

“OMG,” considered by many to be the anthem of the up-and-coming 2024 Mets, is set to be released Friday.

“This is all about energy. This is all about winning,” Iglesias said in an interview with SNY ahead of the official release on Friday. “The guys loved it and I’m very proud to have made this song. The fans loved it. We’re on a roll, everything is exactly where it needs to be and oh my god, I’m so happy.”

Not all of Iglesias’ teammates knew about his singing talent before he joined the team.

Vientos first discovered Iglesias’ off-field talent during a practice session when the veteran showed him a music video of his collaboration with Cuban musician Lenier on the song “No Voy A Volver.”

This track has been viewed 1.7 million times on YouTube.

“I was like, ‘Bro, you actually sound pretty good,'” Vientos said, according to MLB.com. “I was surprised. I didn’t know that.”

Iglesias, who made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2011, signed a minor league contract with the Mets in December 2023.

He began the season with the Triple-A Syracuse Mets, where he had a .273 batting average with seven home runs and 29 RBIs.

The 34-year-old had three hits in his second start on June 3 and has been a consistent contributor since, posting an OPS of .905 in his 16 games.

Iglesias is no doubt hoping to achieve similar success beyond diamonds with his new song and his budding music career.

It’s safe to assume his new song will be played Friday night when the Mets begin their three-game series against the Astros at Citi Field.
