“Happy Juneteenth and to everyone who is bombarding me with unbearable racism – since it took me 72 hours on my laptop to make this song and video, you have 72 hours to respond. And I expect a choreography!!,” Stenberg posted on Instagram.

Stenberg begins “Discourse” with a reference to a 2018 interview with Trevor Noah that went viral on social media. In the interview, Stenberg said that “white people crying is actually the goal” of The hate you givea film about the consequences of the murder of a black teenager by a police officer.

“They split the lines, create hate they recognize, make it look like the same propaganda they spew because they mistake our pain for violence and try to weaponize everything we do,” Stenberg sings. “The desperation of the oppressors is growing and now they’re holding onto anything they can use. When you respond to misinformation, that tells me you’re afraid of the truth.”

Stenberg also had something to say about the right-wing media that turned the word “woke” into a negative.

“They twist WOKE, distort it, and appropriate it,” Stenberg sings. “As I recall, WOKE was something we created. Speak truth to power. Watch out you stupid racists, and now they use it to describe everything they’ve been threatened with.”

Stenberg also refers to Childish Gambino’s use of the phrase “stay woke” in his 2016 song “Redbone.”

“It was about people recognizing bigotry,” Stenberg sings. “The power of community, not fodder for your clickbait.”
