‘Proud moment’: Video of Sahana Bajpaie’s student singing Rabindranath Tagore’s song goes viral

Dr. Sahana Bajpaie is known as a renowned singer, songwriter and academic. She is currently a Senior Fellow teaching Bengali Language and Literature at SOAS, University of London. Bajpaie recently delighted social media users with a heartwarming video of one of her students singing a famous song by Rabindranath Tagore.

In the clip shared by Bajpaie on Instagram, student Lila Saw-Mitchell can be seen passionately singing Tagore’s iconic song Amar Praner Manush Aache Prane. As her melodious voice fills the atmosphere, viewers are visibly mesmerized and many capture the moment on camera.

Dr Sahana Bajpaie, a pioneer of Rabindrasangeet with a PhD from King’s College London, has the honour of having written the first doctoral thesis on this genre of music in the UK and Europe. Sahana’s journey began in Santiniketan, West Bengal, where she was raised on Rabindrasangeet and Bengali Baul songs and was awarded the Bengal’s Pride Award by the British Parliament for her significant contributions to art and culture.

Her performances have graced prestigious venues around the world, from the Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall in the UK to international stages in the USA, Germany, Poland, Italy and across Europe. Bajpaie spent formative years in Dhaka, Bangladesh and now lives in London.
