Mississippi Music opens summer concert series at the Bemidji Waterfront

Mississippi Music has launched its eighth annual Summer Concert Series at the Bemidji Waterfront, a summer-long festival event.

Every Wednesday for the rest of the summer, Bemidji’s waterfront is filled with food, music, and fun. Mississippi Music has been hosting its summer concert series since 2016.

“When we started this, we envisioned the community wanting to come together and that it would be a great way for people to connect, get to know each other, share and be together in the summer,” says Nathan Matthews, a music volunteer from Mississippi. “Of course the music is important, but being together as a community is even more important and I think that was one of the visions we had when we started this.”

Although the band is the main attraction, there are plenty of other things to experience as well.

“We can sit down and listen to the bands, have a few beers from Bemidji Brewing and then I’m home in bed by 9 p.m.,” says Kristi Miller, another volunteer. “It’s just perfect. It’s free to get in, there’s no charge. There are a few food booths here and of course there’s beer and great music.”

Each event features different food trucks, sponsors and bands. The first week started with PK Mayo on stage. There was a good turnout and many people sang and danced along.

“It’s grown over the years and people are really excited about it,” Miller added. “And I can’t blame them. I mean, the weather is perfect and the music sounds good. Good vibes. Very good vibes.”

And the summer concert series not only draws people to the waterfront every Wednesday night, but they also find themselves in the heart of downtown, full of shops, restaurants and more.

“To support our downtown, we have a really cool downtown in Bemidji,” says Matthews, “and we want to try to celebrate the magic of downtown and celebrate our beautiful water here and our lakes.”

The summer concert series includes seven more events, with three more Wednesdays in July and then every week in August, from 6 to 8 p.m.
