In A quiet place: day oneIn the final scene, Sam plays Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” on her iPod – an action that ultimately leads to her death. Towards the end of the film, Sam, Frodo and their apocalypse companion Eric (Joseph Quinn) discover that there are boats that take survivors away from the alien-infested city. Unfortunately, they are ambushed by the creatures. Before they find the boats, Eric helps Sam tick off her bucket list, which includes visiting a childhood jazz club – a place where her father played – and enjoying pizza at a legendary New York eatery.

When the creatures block their escape route to the boats, Sam, filled with emotion, decides to make a sacrifice. She smashes car windows, setting off alarms and distracting the creatures. This allows Eric and Frodo to escape to safety – something Sam had planned. Later, Sam walks through the empty streets of Manhattan, playing “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone on an iPod. After a moment, she takes off her headphones, allowing the music to play and the creatures to find her.

Music plays a key role in Sam’s life. As she tells Eric, one of her fondest childhood memories was a jazz club. Nina Simone’s iconic song – “it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life” – captures something of the post-apocalyptic world of the Quiet Place films. The lyrics celebrate the natural beauty of the world, as Simone declares, “And I feel good.” The song shows Sam coming to terms with her fate.

Before the creatures arrived, she was terminally ill. Thanks to Eric, she was able to have some good and lasting memories. Most importantly, she makes the decision to call the creatures. While listening to Nina Simone’s encouraging song, Sam chooses the end of her story. Although it is tragic in some ways, A quiet place: day one gives its protagonist a final bit of room to maneuver in an otherwise dark moment.
