MILPITAS – A 49-year-old inmate at Elmwood Correctional Facility died Friday, two days after officers found him unconscious in his cell, authorities said.
Officers made the discovery during a routine welfare check at about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Deputy Felicia Segura said in a press release.
The man was resuscitated and taken to a nearby hospital. He was pronounced dead at around 1:45 a.m. Friday morning. It is the sixth death in the county’s custody this year.
The county coroner’s office will release the man’s identity once his next of kin has been notified.
The man’s death is currently under investigation, but the inmate appears to have committed suicide, Segura said, adding that there is no evidence of foul play.
On Sunday, San Jose police officers took the man to the county jail because he had multiple warrants out for his arrest and was accused of multiple drug offenses and resisting arrest, Segura said.
Check back later for updates.
