Update on the status of the Golden State Warriors with Chris Paul

The Golden State Warriors originally had until Friday to decide whether to exercise the $30 million non-guaranteed option on Chris Paul’s contract for next season.

Paul was acquired from the Washington Wizards in the Jordan Poole trade last summer. The 12-time All-Star isn’t the player he once was, but he also performed pretty well for the Warriors last season.

Still, Golden State will not pick up the option on a 39-year-old guard who is clearly at the end of his career. The team’s luxury tax situation is one of the obvious reasons he won’t be back next season.

Reports early in the offseason suggested that CP3 was willing to push back the deadline on his contract option.

That has now become a reality. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the deadline has been pushed back to the start of NBA free agency on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET. This gives the Warriors more time to negotiate a trade.

This $30 million non-guaranteed contract seems like a valuable trade piece. Golden State should be able to find a trade partner.

Currently, everything seems to indicate that Paul’s contract will go to his former team, the Los Angeles Clippers, as part of a larger transfer, which would give the Warriors Paul George.

If that doesn’t happen, the Warriors will have to start trade talks with other teams again. That wouldn’t be an ideal scenario and would potentially result in Golden State having to give up Paul and forfeiting that valuable contract.

Paul averaged 9.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 6.8 assists on 37% shooting from beyond the arc for the Warriors last season.
