The battle between fast food companies and the dwindling customer dollar is heating up, and another company is entering the cheap meal ring.

Following in the footsteps of McDonald’s, Wendy’s and its other competitors, Taco Bell is now introducing its own version of a combo deal to lure inflation-stricken consumers back to its restaurants.

The Luxe Cravings Box includes several popular menu items for a total price of $7, including a Chalupa Supreme, a Beefy 5-Layer Burrito, a Double Stacked Taco, chips and nacho cheese sauce, and a medium drink. According to Taco Bell, that’s a 55% discount on regular menu prices for these items.

However, the California-based company says the box will only be available for a limited time. Although Taco Bell hasn’t given an exact end date, the $5 Taco Discovery Box – another value meal that was only available on Tuesdays – was removed from the menu on June 4. However, the Cravings Value Menu, featuring 10 items for $3 or less, will remain.

“With the launch of the $7 Luxe Cravings Box, we are offering our customers our most coveted items at an affordable price, fulfilling our promise to satisfy our fans’ cravings with the most popular full-on menu items,” said Taylor Montgomery, Chief Marketing Officer of Taco Bell North America. “Our Cravings Value Menu is one of the industry’s leading value menus, offering 10 items for under $3 because we believe customers don’t have to choose between affordability and abundance.”

Taco Bell’s move came a week after McDonald’s introduced its limited-time $5 meal, which includes four chicken nuggets, small French fries, a small soft drink and a customer’s choice of McDouble or McChicken sandwich.

And Wendy’s also recently announced a similar $5 Biggie Bag that includes a sandwich, small fries, four chicken nuggets and a small drink. Wendy’s sandwich options include a Junior Bacon Cheeseburger, a Crispy Chicken BLT or a Double Stack.

This new trend toward inexpensive meals comes at a time when customer traffic in the fast-food industry has declined due to rising menu costs and shrinking flexible spending budgets.

According to a recent report by the consulting firm Revenue Management Solutions, consumers are visiting restaurants less than before: almost 40 percent of respondents said they were cutting back on spending in this area.
