One person died after reportedly stumbling onto the T tracks in Boston Friday afternoon before being struck by an Orange Line train, police said.
MBTA Transit Police responded to the fatal incident early Friday afternoon at Jackson Square Station.
“An adult apparently tripped, entered the right-of-way and was struck by an incoming MBTA OL train,” a Transit Police spokesman said in a statement.
“The individual was pronounced deceased due to injuries sustained,” the spokesperson added. “TPD investigators are currently actively investigating the facts and circumstances of the incident.”
The investigators do not believe that anyone else was at fault.
“On behalf of the TPD and the entire MBTA organization, we extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” the spokesman said.
At 12:29 p.m., the MBTA warned the public on social media about a “medical emergency” at Jackson Square.
“Orange Line: Service between North Station and Forest Hills is suspended due to a medical emergency at Jackson Square,” the T posted. “Downtown riders may use the Green Line as an alternate connection between North Station and Copley.”
“Orange Line update: While Transit Police conduct their investigation at Jackson Square, buses will continue to be used as backups,” the T later posted at 2:27 p.m. “Commuter rail will run free between South Station, Back Bay, Ruggles and Forest Hills.”
