T-minus two months until Judgement Day on Netflix. The machines spread for the first time in the anime with Terminator Zero, The premiere is scheduled for the end of August. The streamer announced the identities of the main roles earlier this week.

We also now know a little more about the plot: The series is set entirely in Japan, moving away from people with the last name “Connor” or “Reese” for the first time. It is 1997 and Tokyo resident Malcolm Lee is haunted by apocalyptic dreams. He believes that the only hope for the future of humanity lies in KOKORO, the highly advanced AI system he is secretly building.

But the audience knows that’s the wrong decision. And so does Eiko, a time traveler from a post-apocalyptic 2022 who has come to tell Malcolm that he is CAUSING the end of the world! The machines don’t want the project to stop, so they send a Terminator to the ’90s to silence Eiko.

Netflix has released the full cast list for Terminator Zero. The biggest name on the list is Rosario Dawson, best known to audiences as the live-action version of Ahsoka Tano in various Disney+ Star Wars shows. She is the voice of KOKORO, but it’s technically not the first electronic being she’s voiced. Not many people know this, but she was Emily in the video game Dishonored 2.

Andre Holland (Moonlight, The Knick) is the voice of Malcolm Lee. Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon, Crazy Rich Asians) plays Eiko, and Timothy Olyphant, from Deadwood And Justified Fame, voices the nameless Terminator (or is the name actually Zero?) Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale, MASS) plays an old woman in the future named “The Prophetess,” who is described as “the philosophical leader of the human resistance.”

Terminator Zero is a collaboration between Skydance and Production IG, with executive producer Mattson Tomlin as director and Masashi Kudo (bleaching) directed. All eight episodes of the first season will premiere on Netflix on August 29.
