Michigan State point guard Jeremy Feats Jr. on medical release from redshirt

Spartans fans received encouraging news on Thursday when it was announced that Michigan State University basketball point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. has been granted a medical redshirt for the 2023-24 season, granting him an additional year of eligibility.

“I’ve known it for a while … but I’m grateful to get the year back, so basically a freshman again with some games under my belt,” Fears said Thursday at the 2024 Moneyball Pro-Am. “I’ve been able to experience college, watch some practices, but this is just going to help me in the long run.”

Fears played his first Moneyball game of the summer on Thursday, teaming up with fellow Spartan Xavier Booker against Team Goodfellas, which also included Michigan State freshman Kur Teng and transfer center Szymon Zapala.

“It’s really like a game environment,” Fears said. “Obviously I’ve been able to practice and run up and down, do everything the team does. So for me, it’s nothing new, just for everybody else and everybody else watching, it’s new. But it’s been great – and I’m grateful – to really be able to move around and get back into the flow of things.”

While it is exciting for both Fears and Spartan fans to be back on the court, he must continue to be cautious with his performance, especially in summer ball.

“It’s obviously different,” Fears said. “You have to be careful about everything and be aware of the things I do and the things that have happened. Obviously I can’t just do something crazy. I still have to be careful and make sure I’m smart about the things I do.”

As for Fears’ plans for the 2024-25 season, Spartans coach Tom Izzo hopes the young point guard takes the next step as a voice on the team.

“Coach (Izzo) wants me to be that leader,” Fears said. “Obviously he has a lot of confidence in me and for me it’s really just about taking the next step, controlling the team, helping everybody get better and also leading and growing myself as a player.”
