Eagles announce plans to wear famous Kelly Green retro uniforms against Cowboys and Jaguars

The Eagles are harking back to Kelly Green’s time and announced Friday that they will wear their retro uniforms in two games this season, including against the Cowboys.

Philadelphia made the announcement Friday morning via a “Save the Date” social media post. The Eagles will wear retro outfits for their Sunday Night Football game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 3. You always need a chic outfit for the biggest night of television. They will then wear them again on December 29 against their archrival Cowboys. Just before the New Year, cool looks are in demand for the archrivals again.

The Eagles wore vintage uniforms twice last season

Philadelphia brought back the Kelly Green uniforms last season and wore them twice, much to the delight of its fans. If you’re an old-school fan who watched games at Veterans Stadium while cheering on Randall Cunningham or Reggie White, you know this look.

The Eagles wore them in the glorious 80s through the early 90s, from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton.

There are other subtle details to these Eagles throwback appearances. The jersey will feature the logo the team wore from 1987 to 1995. The pants are a bright silver tone. Until last season’s throwback appearances, the Eagles last wore the silver pants in 1995.

The Eagles wore the same look in 2010, but that was for one special moment, when the franchise honored the 50th anniversary of Philadelphia’s NFL championship team.

Let’s go back to 1992. Remember that playoff game between the Eagles and the Cowboys? It would be fun to see Charles Haley and Randall Cunningham face off. We’ll have to settle for the uniforms. (USA TODAY Sports)

Philadelphia used to wear black uniforms for an alternative look

The Eagles first considered the idea of the Kelly Green retro helmet in 2012. But that didn’t work out because the NFL only allowed one helmet. The league changed the rules in 2022.

The NFL now allows teams to use up to four different jerseys per season. That means one home and one away jersey, plus two alternate looks. Before Kelly Green, the Eagles used black jerseys for an alternate look.

The Eagles won both games last season wearing their retro look. The new look excites the players and gets the fans fired up. And then the team can sell the uniforms to fans who appreciate the team’s history. It’s a win-win, right?

Fans can start the countdown to the season. The Eagles report to preseason camp on July 23, so the regular season is getting closer and closer. Jersey news will help you through the time until then.
