Character.AI allows users to voice chat with AI characters

Character.AI has officially launched its new feature, Character Calls, which allows users to have immersive voice conversations with AI-powered characters. Like Character.AI’s text-based characters, users can emulate real people or fictional characters using over 1 million community-created voices, creating a customized and tailored experience.

Additionally, characters can speak with different pitches, tones, accents, and even languages ​​to suit a variety of use cases. Supported languages ​​include English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and more.

“With Character Calls, your characters level up and become your ultimate sidekick, entertainer, and guide! Whether you want to brush up on your language skills, ace interviews, spice up roleplays, or develop epic storylines, characters are ready to answer your call, add to the fun, and help you do what you want to do,” Character.AI’s announcement said.

Additionally, characters can dynamically respond and participate, simulating the flow of a natural conversation. Instead of a back-and-forth conversation over text, users can pause characters with the press of a button. Additionally, users can switch between text and voice chats mid-conversation.

The addition of voice calling to Character.AI and its extensive voice library represents a major step forward for the company’s strategy to build a multimodal interface. As an encouraging sign for this thesis, over 3 million unique users have made 20 million character calls.

Notably, OpenAI delayed the upcoming ChatGPT voice mode by at least a month earlier this week due to content moderation concerns.
