Comments from Chris Young suggest the Rangers could be eyeing a key trade deadline signing

The Texas Rangers were swept by the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday and then lost to the Baltimore Orioles in the series opener. The defending World Series champions fell to 37-44 on the season.

Texas is eight games out of the top spot in the AL West and seven games out of the Wild Card race. The offense has been struggling lately, and general manager Chris Young has made some key roster moves to try and add some momentum.

The Rangers have called up outfielder Derek Hill from Triple-A Round Rock and optioned infielders Justin Foscue and Ezequiel Duran.

Young commented on the moves and based on what he said, Texas could look to shake things up even further with one or two impactful moves at the trade deadline.

“We can’t sit back and wait and hope that everything works out. It’s time for us to get going; it’s time for us to start playing offensively like the team we can be,” Young said. “I have a lot of confidence in all of those players, but for a number of reasons we just haven’t performed to the level we expected.”

Young, of course, knows that the Rangers need to improve their offense to get back in the race. Texas has Adolis Garcia, Nathaniel Lowe, Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and other stars on its team, which should make them a top offensive team.

But they have been struggling, and Young is clearly hoping his actions will help make a difference.

However, this could mean that Texas is looking to bolster the offense at the trade deadline. On the pitching side, Max Scherzer has returned and Jacob deGrom will not be sticking around much longer as he hopes to return in August.

But the offense could use a boost. The team ranks 17th in the major leagues in runs scored. They are 18th in batting average with a weak .237.

The market hasn’t really developed yet, so it’s unclear what improvements the Rangers will look to make at the deadline. Perhaps they could target someone like Brent Rooker or even try to reunite Garcia with former teammate Randy Arozarena.

Young has made it clear that the status quo will not be enough as Rangers continue to slide down the table and there is still a lot of catching up to do between now and July.

We’ll see if the Rangers can get their offense together in the meantime while fans wait for a deal at the deadline.
