Max’s Harry Potter show gets surprising additions from another HBO series

It remains to be seen whether Max will succeed in producing a new Harry Potter series based on the popular Daniel Radcliffe films, but I mean, it was always clear that they were going to do it at some point. Seven books, probably seven seasons of the series that they’re committing to, and no matter what happens, it’s probably going to bring in huge numbers. Now they’re starting to put a team together.

No, no actors yet. It’s too early for that. But Deadline reports that they’ve just hired two people to write and direct the series, based on a surprise HBO show.

Succession. You probably didn’t expect that, did you?

We’re talking about Francesca Gardiner, who will write the script, and Mark Myold, who will direct. Gardiner previously produced seasons 3 and 4 of Succession and will be showrunner of the Harry Potter series. Myold directed a dozen episodes of Succession and will direct many other episodes here, in addition to his role as producer.

Currently, the adaptation is slated for a 2026 release. It will actually feature a new cast and not bring back the original team, as that obviously wouldn’t make a lot of sense. But it would likely follow a similar philosophy, casting young actors that we see grow each year with each new season, in line with the timeline of the books (though with over 2 years between seasons of the streaming series, it certainly won’t line up exactly). Harry Potter was 11 in the first book. Daniel Radcliffe was actually 11 when he filmed the first movie. By the time filming on the last movie wrapped, he was almost 21.

I’m not sure there’s any point in speculating on the cast considering how young they must be, and I’m not sure I can even name any well-known 11-year-old actors for these roles. There’s also a running joke that practically every well-known British actor has had a role in the show at some point, so who’s left to play these older roles without reprises? I’d be surprised if zero The cast will return, although the “big three” clearly won’t.

I have no doubt that this project will be A) controversial and B) extremely successful, as the odds of this show not being a huge hit when it debuts are zero percent. And if part of the Succession team is running the show? That might be a completely different story, but hey, they know good TV.
