Song you must know: Miss Kaninna, “Push Up”

With sensual tones that wouldn’t be out of place in a classic 90’s R&B song, Miss Kaninna’s latest single shows exactly why she’s one of Australian music’s hottest rising stars right now.

Proud Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Kalkadoon and Yirendali woman and multi-award winning artist from Naarm/Melbourne-via-Lutriwita/Tasmania today released “Push Up”, her first single of 2024.

The danceable soft pop/R&B offering features buttery smooth synth glides and 808 cowbells, instantly enveloping the listener in a warm, dreamy atmosphere that can only be found in the best summer romance clips of the early 90s.

Following the success of critically acclaimed debut singles “Blak Britney” and “Pinnacle Bitch,” which have garnered over 1.5 million combined streams, Miss Kaninna continues to break convention with her latest single, with producer Jacob Farah (Dean Brady, KYE) helping to bring Amapiano and Afrobeats influences into her sound, bringing her voice to the forefront.

“Working with Jacob was an incredible experience – as two black artists, we wanted to deliver music that had the potential to stand up to international acts, music that felt good, music for our communities and music that we want to hear,” says Miss Kaninna.

Inspired by her momentous move from Lutruwita to Naarm in 2022, the track is about how much fun it is to meet new people, feel good about yourself and not worry about what other people think.

“‘Push Up’ is a really good introduction to the range and versatility of my music – and it was just so much fun to make the song,” says Miss Kaninna. “I’ve always been a singer, but some people don’t know that I make this kind of music.

“You get to know me better, come to me and get closer to me. It’s about being really flexible, not worrying about labels or genders or anything like that. Love is free and we love whoever we want – being 100% ourselves is so important.”

“Push Up” by Miss Kaninna is now available.
