The Club For Boys organizes an annual carnival event

RAPID CITY, SD (KEVN) – There was lots of fun and games at the Club For Boys on Thursday, June 27th where the annual “Under The Big Top” event was held.

It was a fairground scene with over 200 children looking to have fun and create memories to last a lifetime.

‘Under The Big Top’ is part of the club’s weekly June events, an annual carnival full of competitions, games, bouncy castles and numerous prizes.

“We have a walking club where they can walk around Memorial Pond with some of our staff, fitness clubs and educational activities. There’s a lot of STEM stuff, kids play carpet ball and pool,” said Club For Boys Director Carri Redmond.

The event is intended to give children a chance who might otherwise not have the opportunity to experience a real carnival.

Redmond finds it enriching to be able to spend valuable time with club members.

“It really makes everyone’s day when kids come in. You just never know what you’re going to get from them. Even the most difficult kids really make the day here worthwhile and our staff is great at building those one-on-one relationships with them,” Redmond said.

Since so many children need to be looked after, the event would not be possible without volunteers.

“We have family members of our members who come here to volunteer. It brings our families together. Plus, we have people from our community who come from different industries to help,” said Samantha Wickham, Club For Boys volunteer event coordinator.

Wickham believes that an event like this can be an inspiration for the community.

“I think it can give people hope when they see our guys, when they see our members having fun and just the joy on the kids’ faces. I think that’s one of the reasons why it’s so important. I think it’s also important for our guys to see people generously giving of their time,” Wickham said.
