Frontman of Crazy Town Shifty Shellshocks Cause of death was announced.
After the Los Angeles County Coroner confirmed that Shellshock (born Seth Binzer) was found dead in his home on Monday, June 24, at the age of 49, the band’s manager announced People that the rapper died of an accidental drug overdose.
“Seth Binzer has never been able to deal with his addictions on a more successful level with ‘Butterfly’ following his battle with addiction and the quick success of Crazy Town,” Hubberman told the outlet in a statement Thursday, June 27. “We all tried, but ultimately we all failed, otherwise Shifty would still be here.”
The statement continued: “The cause of death was a combination of prescription drugs and drugs purchased on the street. Shifty was a friend and was desperate to heal himself – unfortunately no one had the right tools to do so, including me.”
The Los Angeles County Coroner is still waiting for a toxicology report for more information.

Shellshock was co-founder of the rap rock band Crazy Town with Bret “Epic” Mazur in 1995. The 2000 single “Butterfly” catapulted the group into fame and became their biggest hit, reaching number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also helped her debut album, The gift of the gameclimb to 9th place in the Billboard 200 more than a year after its release.
After the band’s second album, 2002 Dark Horsewas less successful, Shellshock pursued a solo career and worked with Paul Oakenfold on his song “Starry Eyed Surprise”. In 2004, Shellshock released his first solo album, Happy Love Sick.
Shellshock often spoke openly about his struggle with substance abuse and appeared in two seasons of the VH1 show Celebrity rehab and two seasons of the follow-up series Sober house. In 2012, he was arrested for assault and drug possession. “I want to sincerely apologize to those involved,” he told TMZ at the time. “I am very sorry to those I offended and to those who endured this situation.”
That same year, a spokesperson for the singer revealed that Shellshock went to rehab. He was later hospitalized after losing consciousness and falling into a coma before regaining consciousness, according to diversityIn 2022, he was arrested for drunk driving, according to the outlet.
Shellshock leaves behind three children: Halo, Gage and Phoenix.
