Deputy sheriff and suspect in Michigan die in rural shooting

HILLSDALE COUNTY, MI — The suspect and his deputy involved in a shooting Thursday in Hillsdale County have both died, police said.

According to Michigan State Police, the shooting occurred June 27 in the area of ​​Beecher and Lamb roads in Osseo, eight miles southeast of Hillsdale.

Police were searching for the suspect, named Eric Michael Fiddler, who was considered armed and dangerous, police said. He was found in a field near the intersection of Culbert and Osseo roads, police said.

Fiddler was ordered to surrender, but he pulled out a gun and fired at the officers. The officers returned fire and Fiddler was killed at the scene, police said.

The officer was taken to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries, police said. The officer’s name will not be released pending notification of his family, police said.

According to police, several law enforcement agencies are assisting on the scene, including dog handler, aviation and emergency support teams.

A police spokesman said there would be an update on Friday, June 28.
