The stars of “My Lady Jane” talk about romance and love scenes

Not many people know the story of Lady Jane Grey and Guildford Dudley, but My Lady Jane definitely works to change that. The two share a passionate love story in the series and according to Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel, who bring the duo to life on screen, making that passion believable meant not being “too sensitive” about certain intimate moments.

Prime Video’s new series, streaming now, tells the true story of Lady Jane Grey, who unexpectedly became Queen of England after her cousin Edward named her his heir after his death. Of course, this series deviates difficult in many ways from Jane’s true story.

One thing remains, however: the fact that Jane was married to Lord Guildford Dudley. In this series, however, they follow more of the enemies-to-lovers cliche (even if there was instant attraction on both sides). And according to Bader, everyone just wanted Jane and Guildford’s relationship to feel real.

This was especially true of the “romantic and intimate scenes”.

“We didn’t want to put too much emphasis on that part of a relationship,” Bader explained to TheWrap. “We wanted it to be funny and realistic and show what it means to fall in love as a real woman, when you get a little angry and say something you don’t really mean but you kind of mean it and ask for forgiveness and all those things. But yeah, we just did it.”

Bluemel readily agreed, noting that he and his co-star built their on-screen relationship largely by following their instincts.

“I think that kind of awkwardness, which is also portrayed in some of the intimate scenes, is so important to their journey,” he said. “And for me and Emily, it’s hard to quantify what chemistry is, so I think sometimes it can be a mistake to intellectualize it too much. And instead you just have to jump in and hope for the best, and I feel like it worked.”

For “My Lady Jane” showrunners Meredith Glynn and Gemma Burgess, the key to writing the relationship between Jane and Guildford was “really sharp, quick quips.”

“We wanted banter to be their love language. We wanted it to be what they wanted foreplay to be,” Glynn told TheWrap. “And we wanted them to hopefully join the pantheon of great couples like Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, like Beatrice and Benedict. And with a little bit of screwball comedy.”
