Field of Dreams and more

Kevin Costner has been a Hollywood heavyweight since the late 1980s, starring in some of the greatest action films, thrillers and sports comedies of the late 20th century.

At the height of his career in the 1990s, he won Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture for Dances with wolvesand played in major blockbusters such as Robin Hood – Prince of ThievesOliver Stone JFK Airport And The BodyguardAnd even some of his less successful hits (Water world, Postman) represented big changes for an aspiring actor and filmmaker.

As the first part of Costner’s three-part film epic Horizon: An American Saga – his first foray as a director since 2003 – hits theaters, take a look back at the early films that made him a star.

“Sizzle Beach, USA”

Kevin Costner would probably prefer you were not recalled his film debut in 1981 Sizzle Beach, USA In 1993, the actor allegedly tried to buy the rights to the racy comedy in which he played a handsome stable owner in order to be able to destroy the negative of the film. “Stacy’s Knight”

After a series of smaller roles in sports dramas Pursuing dreams (1982), the comedy directed by Ron Howard Night shift (1982) and an uncredited appearance in the film biography of Frances Farmer Frances (1982), Kevin Costner’s next major film appearance was in 1983 in Stacy’s Knight. The then 28-year-old played a card counting coach who meets a tragic end at the hands of the corrupt owners of a casino. The film is currently available to stream for free on Tubi, the Roku Channel and Sling.

“The Arms Smuggler”

Originally published in 1983, The arms smuggler Kevin Costner played an idealistic young Canadian who initially supplies weapons to Chinese rebels before coming into contact with liquor smugglers in his homeland in the 1920s. The film was re-released in 1989 after Costner became a major star, but it is currently not available to stream or purchase on any platform.

‘Fandango’

In 1983, Kevin Costner also appeared in small roles in Table for five And testamentHe played the deceased friend whose death the characters in The great coldbut his scenes were eventually cut from the film, and in 1984 he appeared in the tasteless erotic thriller Shadows run black.

He played his first major leading role in 1985 in the comedy fandangoin which he played a college graduate on a road trip with his buddies before they all get drafted into the Vietnam War. The film is available to rent or buy on Apple TV, YouTube, Prime Video, and other platforms.

“American Flyers”

In the same summer, Silverado Kevin Costner played in the sports drama American Flyersin which he plays a sports medicine doctor trying to repair his relationship with his brother as they both share a passion for cycling. The film is currently available to stream for free on Tubi and the Roku Channel.

‘The Untouchables’

In this Prohibition-era crime drama, Kevin Costner played real-life US Prohibition Bureau agent Eliot Ness, who worked with a team of agents in the 1930s to bring down notorious gangster Al Capone (Robert De Niro). The Untouchables is currently streaming on Paramount+.

‘No escape’

The year 1987 brought Kevin Costner another star work. In neo-noir thriller No escapeHe played a naval intelligence officer suspected of murdering a woman he was having an affair with, alongside Gene Hackman and Sean Young. The film is available to stream for free on Tubi, Pluto, and the Roku Channel, as well as with a subscription to MGM+.

“Bull Durham”

In the late 80s, Kevin Costner was officially a big Hollywood star, and in 1988 romantic comedy Bull Durham This only cemented it further. In 2003, the film, in which Costner plays minor league baseball veteran Crash Davis alongside Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, surpassed Sports illustrated‘s list of the 50 best sports movies of all time. Bull Durham is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Kevin Costner followed Bull Durham the following year with another baseball classic, the Field of DreamsIn the film, Costner plays an Iowa farmer who is driven by a mysterious voice to turn his cornfield into a baseball field that somehow attracts the ghosts of dead baseball players. Field of Dreams can be streamed with an AppleTV+ subscription until June 30th.
