Chris’ Jazz Café puts up-and-coming female instrumentalists in the spotlight in a new series

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Chris’ Jazz Café at 1421 Sansom Street celebrates emerging female jazz musicians with a new series titled Female instrumentalists in jazz: The new generationThe series runs from July 24 to 27 and presents talented young women who are making waves in the jazz scene.

The series kicks off on Wednesday, July 24, with the Sarah Hanahan Quartet. Hanahan, a talented saxophonist from New York City, is currently pursuing her Masters in Jazz Performance at the Juilliard School. The following night, Thursday, July 25, West Philly-based vibraphonist Hudson River will take the stage. River began her career in the drumline at Upper Darby High School and has since become a well-known street performer and event artist in Philadelphia.

On Friday, July 26, the Hailey Brinnel Quintet will perform with special guest trumpeter Summer Camargo. Brinnel, a trombonist, singer and educator from Philadelphia, was a finalist in the 2021 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. She was also featured on Spotify’s “Best Vocal Jazz of 2022” playlist and was named one of the “10 Emerging Jazz Artists to Watch” by GRAMMY.com.

The series concludes on Saturday, July 27, with the Laura Orzehoski Quintet. Orzehoski is currently studying Jazz Studies at Temple University with Terell Stafford and has performed at prestigious venues such as Dizzy’s Jazz Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center and Birdland in New York City.

This initiative is supported by Live Music Society’s Music in Action grant, which aims to highlight emerging minority and women artists in music. Mark DeNinno, chef and owner of Chris’ Jazz Café, expressed his excitement for the series, stating, “We plan to host several women-focused festivals and workshops in the coming year. We hope this program will bring attention to events geared toward women while fostering connections between local female artists where they can hone their craft while creating collaborations that lead to friendships, community support, mentorship, and networking in the jazz industry.”
