WestJet is cancelling at least 25 flights ahead of tomorrow’s strike, affecting approximately 3,300 passengers.

The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), which represents the Canadian airline’s maintenance technicians and other technical operations staff, has announced a second strike against WestJet on June 25. The walkout could occur as early as 5:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. ET) on June 28.

“As the July long weekend approaches, it is particularly devastating that AMFA’s strike announcement is forcing us to cancel flights and park aircraft – for the second time in just over a week. As we are forced to make this painful decision, each of us at WestJet feels the immense impact this will have on each of our guests and the communities we serve who are counting on us to accommodate their travel plans this weekend,” said Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer.

According to WestJet, the timing of the strike – a Friday of the July long weekend – could result in travel cancellations for up to 250,000 passengers.

At a press conference held yesterday, WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech called on the union to “act sensibly,” pointing out that engineers are already among the best paid in Canada.

The union does not consider the offer sufficient. AMFA President Bret Oestreich told TMR that WestJet “refuses to engage in meaningful negotiations on economic issues,” referring to previous press statements by Hoensbroech.

“Whether there is a strike or not, AMFA will always be ready for negotiations,” said Oestreich.
