Mina Kimes is 100% right with her opinion on Jordan Love’s contract extension

Mina Kimes is 100% right with her opinion on Jordan Love’s contract extension

What is the price to pay for finding one franchise quarterback after another with unprecedented success?

Well, the Green Bay Packers are about to find out, as Jordan Love is set to receive one of the biggest contracts in the league. Love was one of the best quarterbacks in football last season, and the Green Bay Packers certainly can’t hide from that.

Of course, they don’t want that, but everyone is waiting for them to make a deal with Love to keep him beyond the 2024 season. As things stand, his contract will expire next offseason and he would be eligible for free agency.

But nobody needs to worry about that, because it won’t come to that.

ESPN’s Mina Kimes always tells the truth, and her take on Love’s contract situation paints a pretty clear picture for the Green Bay Packers.

“From Love’s perspective, of course he should try to make the most of it. He bet on himself and won. From the Packers’ perspective, I’ve seen enough of Jordan Love. Get the deal done and pay what it takes because he’s that guy.”

In the second half of the season (2023), he was one of the top three quarterbacks in football. And when you see that, you see that it wasn’t artificial, it wasn’t just schemed, although Matt LaFleur is a great playmaker. He made high-difficulty throws in crucial situations. I think he has all the tools to be one of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL, and I don’t think that’s an exaggeration considering what I saw last year.”

And again: What is another successful era at the quarterback position worth to the Packers?

Is it worth getting upset that he didn’t even play until last year due to franchise circumstances? The sample size of other players getting massive contract extensions in the league is much larger than Love’s, but as Mina Kimes points out, Love has the tools to establish himself as one of the top five quarterbacks in the entire league.

And he should approach negotiations with that in mind, not just trying to take a loss for the Packers. It would be shocking if Love rejiggers the QB market, but I don’t think he’ll try that under his circumstances.

But he should definitely look for deals that are on par with some of his peers like Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow.

The average annual worth of all these people exceeded $50 million.

As hard as it may be to swallow, that’s the price of success at the quarterback position in today’s NFL. And for the Green Bay Packers, it would be worth every penny.
