Michigan no-kill animal shelter needs donations for expansion

(CBS) – A no-kill animal shelter in St. Clair County is asking the public for help. It needs money to expand the shelter so it can continue to help animals in need.

“We don’t like that there are so many animals out there that are homeless and need help. But they need us and we’re going to expand this facility a little bit to try to help these animals as best we can,” says Katie Phelan, director of the Blue Water Area Humane Society in Clyde.

As you can see in the video above, construction has already begun. Phelan says they started last year but are still relying on donations to finish everything. She gave CBS News Detroit a look inside the space and explained the purpose of each area.

“When dogs stare at each other across the aisle, it’s very stressful for them and it agitates them. They get really agitated. So if we can design something where we have that line of sight, it’s much better for those dogs,” she said.

Other improvements include kennels, cage systems for isolated cats, a children’s area for mother cats and kittens, new housing for rabbits and guinea pigs, and more.
