PHOENIX – The Phoenix Suns welcomed Virginia winger Ryan Dunn to the Valley after selecting him 28th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft.
Phoenix made fans wait longer than expected after falling from 22nd place. Suns GM James Jones traded back with the Denver Nuggets and received a total of three second-round picks in addition to pick 28.
The Suns have signed someone who many consider to be one of the best defenders in the draft:
Ryan Dunn needs to work on his offense, but he has the potential to become the type of player every team wants:

It’s safe to say that Suns fans are pretty excited about the selection:

Before draft night, media outlets like ESPN emphasized that Dunn’s reputation had increased in the draft and that he was ultimately selected in the first round of the draft.
“Dunn is expected to gain momentum in this portion of the draft after a series of stellar workouts this month put him firmly in the first round. Multiple teams have said Dunn has exceeded expectations with his shots while also doing absolutely mesmerizing things defensively, defending point guards through centers in huddle lineups,” Jonathan Givony wrote.
Ryan Dunn adds instant youth, size, defense and athleticism to the Suns’ rotation.
The jumper still has a *long* way to go, but he can play right away by providing top-notch defense on the wing, something the Suns lack.

The rest of the Western Conference will likely be shaking in fear when Dunn takes the stage.

The general consensus online seems to be a great appreciation for what Dunn already is: a player who can step in and contribute immediately.
Ryan Dunn is a good athlete and has good length, knows his strengths, takes pride in getting stops, makes you earn your stops, and defends the entire possession whether he’s rushing you, covering off screens, providing help, protecting the passing lanes or the basket. He’s also a good slasher/cutter.

Some would even say… a perfect fit.
Ryan Dunn to the Suns is perfect.
Potentially a world-class defender. On offense, he can block, catch lobs and dodge. That works when all of Phoenix’s shooters are there. He’ll be good, and if his shot develops, he has great potential. pic.twitter.com/Hn9l49RAkL

For a guy who isn’t exactly considered an offensive weapon, he can take quite a beating:

All in all, the Suns can rest assured knowing that help is on the way, at least on defense.
Arguably the best defender in the draft, Ryan Dunn fits seamlessly into the Phoenix Suns system. With a remarkable 7’5″ wingspan and an impressive 38″ jump, this assertive and efficient winger will have a significant impact on the team’s rotation.
