Back in action ⎯ Javelin throw from the museum goes to the Olympic qualifying competitions

COLORADO SPRINGS – An artifact from the United States Olympic and Paralympic Museum is back in use.

Four-time Olympian Kara Winger borrows her favorite javelin to compete in Olympic qualifiers.

Winger, who lives in Colorado Springs, set an American record with the javelin in 2010 and another American record with the same javelin 12 years later.

“As far as special artifacts of the Olympics and my Olympic journey go, this is a really big piece,” Winger said. “I wasn’t actually planning on loaning it back, but here we are, trying again.”

She has decided to retire from the sport in 2022, but she has been training and feeling what she is feeling, which is part of her decision to strive for her fifth Olympic Games.

She wants to compete with the spear that is on display at the museum in Colorado Springs.

“The one that flies best for me.”

The javelin competitions will begin on June 28, 2024 at the legendary Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
