Walker review: The series finale leaves 1 question unanswered

Cordell Walker said goodbye to the Texas Rangers, as did Jared Padalecki.

The season four finale of Walker—which was also the series finale of the CW series—was full of emotional moments that rounded out the show. Well, it left one question unanswered.

The episode, titled “See You Sometime,” aired on Wednesday, June 26, and focused on the Walker family rebuilding after the Jackal case was closed.

Now that The Jackal, aka Cole Tillman (Brian Letscher), was captured, Cordell begins his next chapter. First, he must ensure that his son Augie (Kale Culley), celebrates his high school graduation the right way. Of course, the father of two children throws his youngest a party – and gives a kind of farewell speech.

“I spent months thinking about how to let go. When to do it, how to do it, and I realized it happened. I have to let it happen,” Padaleckis Cordell told his son and the party guests. “To my family: I love you. Without you, I am nothing and I am more grateful than ever to be here and now with you.”

The party took place after it was announced that Cassie (Ashley Reyes) had grabbed the position of Texas Ranger Lieutenant ahead of Trey (Jeff-Pierre). However, after the party, she receives a letter from Cordell asking for a vacation. Since there is still tension between Cordell and Cassie after the death of Detective Luna (Justin Johnson-Cortez), both agree that it would be good for them to spend the summer apart.

With an engagement ring in his pocket, Cordell packs his pickup truck for a summer with his girlfriend – and possible new fiancée – Geri (Odette Annable), daughter Stella (Violet Brinson) and Augie. As they drive away into the Texas sunshine, a moving truck passes them with a new neighbor in tow.

While Cordell and the kids hope there won’t be any drama with the new arrival in the neighborhood, it seems like something sinister is afoot. The mysterious neighbor went to the Walker ranch and left a basket of soaps on the porch and a note that read, “Hi neighbor! Sorry I missed you!”

The camera panned up and revealed James Van Der Beek in an unnamed role with a big smile on his face. As he got back into his truck, the credits rolled, and as Walker finished, one important question remained unanswered: Who is Van Der Beek playing, and what does he want with the Walker family? (OK, maybe more than one question remained unanswered.)

Van Der Beek had previously hinted at his role in the show in March, when the actor revealed that he had secretly sneaked onto the set to meet Walker, the showrunner and former Dawson’s Creek writer Anna Fricke(It’s important to note that Walker filmed in Texas, where Van Der Beek lives.)

Late last month, Padalecki announced in an emotional social media post that Walker had been canceled after four seasons.

“Hi everyone. It is with a heavy heart that I share this news. #Walker will not be airing a fifth season on the #CW,” he wrote on May 21. “This is certainly tough news, but we are SO grateful for the #WalkerFamily that has been created both on and off set.”
