NEW YORK — Only heavy thunderstorms in the region could slow the Mets’ advance.

The second Subway Series game between the Mets and Yankees was called in the fifth inning with the Mets leading 4-0 at Citi Field. Since the Mets are leading, this is an official game.

The Mets used a three-run third inning to take the lead against the Yankees’ Luis Gil. After Francisco Lindor hit his second double of the game to right field, Brandon Nimmo drew a walk and JD Martinez hit an RBI single to open the scoring.

After Pete Alonso suffered a ground ball that forced a double play, Francisco Alvarez hit a high fastball into the bullpen in right-center field and hit a two-run home run that gave the Mets a 3-0 lead.

Alvarez scored another run in the fifth inning after Gil was forced out on two walks. The Mets catcher hit an RBI double off the right outfield wall.

In three innings, Sean Manaea battled through adversity. He loaded the bases with one out in the opening inning before getting Alex Verdugo to hit an inning-ending double play. Manaea got double-play balls from Jose Trevino in the second inning and again from Verdugo in the fourth inning after allowing two leadoff baserunners.
