Princess Tiana’s voice actress Anika Noni Rose speaks out about the Disney character’s revival following backlash

Anika Noni Rose, the voice actress of Princess Tiana, knew that some fans were offended by how Disney portrayed the character in Chaos on the InternetShe said she had intentionally “kept a low profile” on the subject in an Instagram post on Tuesday, “because it was important to me to do my due diligence before publicly addressing something that is as close to my heart (and as much) as Princess Tiana.”

Now that the Wall Street Journal published a report saying that the figure would be in Destroy it Ralph In the sequel, Rose sheds light on the matter.

When the Mouse House released the first trailers for Chaos on the InternetFans quickly noticed how different Princess Tiana looked in the film compared to her first appearance in The Princess and the FrogHer skin appeared lighter and her facial features sharper. Rose noticed this too and contacted Disney about the situation.

“My team and I immediately called the studio to discuss the visual changes, and three weeks ago I had a personal meeting with the Destroy it Ralph Team, my original animator (on The Princess and the Frog) Mark Henn and others,” Rose writes. “They explained how CGI animation rendered the color tones of the characters differently in different lighting than hand-drawn original characters, and I was able to express how important it was to the little girls (and let’s face it, grown women) who felt represented by her that her skin tone remained as rich as before and that her nose continued to be the small round nose that Mark portrayed so beautifully in the film.”

Since Rose spoke out, Henn and the team at Disney walked the actress through “the steps they took to restore the things that were lost in the film from hand drawing to CGI.”

“It was important to me to hear what Disney had to say and have an open dialogue about legacy and representation,” notes Rose. “They didn’t have to take the time to give me a presentation about the process, but I’m very glad they did. I also appreciate that at this point in the process, Disney had enough care and respect for everyone who loves Princess Tiana and her legacy to spend the time and money to make the necessary adjustments.”
