Why Packers quarterback Jordan Love will take the next step to fame in 2024

Last season, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love needed some time to settle into his new starting role. But once he settled in, Love was able to show why the Packers selected him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, even if it did make then-starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers a little upset.

After a rocky 2-5 start, some questioned the direction of the Packers organization. Love had shown flashes of ability but had not yet been able to put together a series of starts that showed meaningful progress. But in the final 10 games of the season, he was able to direct the offense and lead the Packers to a 7-3 record and a postseason berth.

Love completed 68.7% of his passes for an average of 266.7 yards per game with a touchdown-interception ratio of 21:3. It was this stretch that confirmed his position as Green Bay’s starter for the future and sparked hope for the future of the Packers franchise.

Expectations are high for Love this season, and rightly so. Love was able to justify the decision to hand him the keys to the franchise, and he rewarded that decision with outstanding play over the final 10 games of the season.

Now, Love should be expected to take the next step forward as a quarterback, moving from offensive player to commander. That line between operator and commander is the difference between the guys you win with and the guys you win because of. Love has been able to show some of the skills you regularly see in the latter group, and a second consecutive offseason of preparation as Green Bay’s starting quarterback should only help him become more comfortable on offense and allow him to flourish as a passer.

A major factor in Love’s development and progress this upcoming season will be the influence of Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. LaFleur’s offensive scheme is widely used throughout the NFL and is known for making a quarterback’s job easier. This means Love will be positioned to succeed as a passer and as a leader of the team.

Don’t be surprised if the Love-LaFleur combination takes off and makes the league sit up and take notice. They’re still a bit under the radar when it comes to quarterback-head coach combinations, but that shouldn’t be the case for much longer.

Love and LaFleur appear to be the next duo that could carry a franchise for a long time. It all starts with the upcoming season and Love’s development into a definitive franchise quarterback, a transformation that began last season and should continue through 2024.
