Investigation into Matthew Perry’s death nears completion, reports say “multiple people” could be charged: The latest

The criminal investigation into the death of Matthew Perry is nearing completion, according to several reports. The beloved Friends Star died on October 28, 2023 from the “acute effects of ketamine.” According to People, police believe “multiple” people should be charged in connection with his death. Here’s what’s going on.

🔍 What is being investigated?

Authorities are currently investigating how Perry obtained the ketamine that killed him, Yahoo Entertainment can confirm. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), United States Postal Service (USPS) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office are all involved in the investigation.

The fact that the USPS is involved suggests that drugs or money were likely sent through the mail. “The US Postal Inspection Service is assisting with the investigation,” a spokesperson told Yahoo. “Further questions should be directed to the Los Angeles Police Department as the lead investigative agency.”

The LAPD confirmed to Yahoo that there is “an open and ongoing investigation into the death of Matthew Perry. No further information is available at this time.”

ABC News and the Los Angeles Times report that the investigation is nearly complete and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file charges in federal court. (When contacted by Yahoo, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office “had no comment.”)

The DEA did not respond to Yahoo’s request for comment.

➡️ Didn’t Perry undergo ketamine therapy, which is legal?

Yes. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner stated that the actor underwent “ketamine infusion therapy” administered to him by a doctor a week and a half before his death. Perry has been open about his mental health issues, and doctors can use ketamine to treat anxiety and depression. However, the medical examiner stated that the levels in Perry’s body were so high that “the ketamine in his body at the time of his death could not have come from that infusion therapy.”

“The exact method of ingestion in Mr. Perry’s case is unknown,” the medical examiner wrote in the December 2023 autopsy report.

Perry was found unconscious in his hot tub at his LA home. Contributing factors were cited as drowning, coronary heart disease and the effects of buprenorphine, which is used to treat opioid use disorder. Perry described his severe opioid addiction in his 2022 memoir.

⚖️ Several people could be charged

A law enforcement source told People that police believe “multiple people” should be charged in connection with Perry’s death. The Los Angeles Times also reported that several people have been linked to the drug’s procurement. No names have been officially released in connection with the investigation.

According to In Touch Weekly, Brooke Mueller, the ex-wife of actor Charlie Sheen, was interviewed by authorities and was “cooperative.” Radar also reported that she was allegedly interviewed “multiple times.” A spokesperson for Mueller did not provide Yahoo with a comment.

🗓️ What happens next?

The U.S. Attorney’s Office could file charges in federal court — or not. If prosecutors decide not to file charges, the case could be sent back to prosecutors.
